Potty Training Suggestions
Technique 1: Preparation
Prepare your 1 1/2 - 2 year old for potty training by letting them
watch either you or an older sibling/friend use the toilet.
Young children are often interested in imitating older children in order
to be "big girls or boys".
Read books and watch videos about potty training. There are many
available at the library and bookstores.
Purchase a child's potty seat so going potty is down on their level on
not so scary on the big toilet.
Technique 2: Positive Reinforcement
Systems
Many parents have gotten good results from using a positive
reinforcement system. Examples are a sticker chart where 3
stickers results in a reward, such as going out for ice cream.
Another example is a penny jar where a penny is received for each potty
attempt. A certain number of pennies can also result in a reward.
Or you could consider an m&m jar if candy motivates your little one.
Technique 3: Nix the diapers
We recommend this technique for children 3 and up who prefer their
diapers to the effort of holding and using the toilet. True there
are pull ups and even pull ups with wetness liners. But the truth
is that for many a youngster who resists potty training, the diaper is
too easy to use. Wetting the floor should not be any way used to
embarrass your child but rather to help him/her learn the process.
Technique 4: Teach the Baby
Try purchasing a baby doll that drinks from a bottle and then pees.
Many children love to be the "teacher." Have your child feed baby,
put show baby how to use the potty, and then you and your child can VERY
ENTHUSIASTICALLY PRAISE THE BABY AND THROW A PARTY IN HIS/HER HONOR!
Then when your child uses the potty, VERY ENTHUSIASTICALLY PRAISE THE
BABY AND THROW A PARTY IN HIS/HER HONOR! Feel free to make up a
special potty song just for the occasion.
All of these techniques can be used together!
